The Household Cavalry Foundation, as well as supporting the soldiers and dependants of the Regimental family, also provides support and assistance to a number of horse welfare organisations that care for and rehome the horses when they retire. Horses start their military career between the ages of 4 and 6 and serve until their twenties. For years the Household Cavalry retired horses have found homes with civilian owners and horse welfare organisations. The Foundation hopes to support these kind benefactors by offering assistance, financial and otherwise. Two of the Household Cavalrys more famous horses are youngsters now but, after a full career, will look at being rehomed like their veteran stable mates.

Spartacus’s Story

Spartacus, The Household Cavalry’s long-distinguished Drum Horse, meets War Horse puppet Joey in Hyde Park – and he was more than a little bemused!

Here’s a photo of Spartacus “in action” with the Household Cavalry.

There was a particularly emotional moment during the Taittinger Household Cavalry Musical Ride, when Spartacus, was retired after 16 years of service. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house as he was led out to “Auld Lang Syne”. He will now live at the Somerset home of Claire Laverick”.

For those of you wondering what’s since happened to Spartacus. Here’s a picture of him now enjoying a happy retirement in the field of his owner Clare Laverick. Here it looks like ‘Sparky’ is teaching a two year old, Excalibur, to “Stand Out”.

No Motcomb Street Party would be complete without the gorgeous (and cheeky) Paul Cullinan.

Paul has over 20 years’ experience in the entertainment industry and has been organising our Street Party entertainment for the past 7 years.

With skills as a professional compere and event organiser, he has entertained many public and corporate audiences over the years.

Paul’s career, which stretches back to the early eighties, ranges from the extremes of playing Pilate in the musical Jesus Christ Superstar to Bungle from the famous Children’s television show, Rainbow. The question regarding why Bungle always wrapped a towel around his waist to protect his modesty after a shower, in spite of the fact that he walked around nude for the rest of time, has never been addressed. (He also wore pajamas at bed time.) Perhaps Paul can tell us? Paul also worked as a puppeteer on the children’s channel Nickelodeon.

His company Media Production & Events was set up as a one-stop shop, with every aspect of entertainment all under one roof, putting the focus firmly on fun. Paul has a small team working extensively with professional suppliers, putting together the best entertainment packages any client would wish for.

I’m sure you’ll all agree that he always puts on a great show!

Tpr David O’Mahoney

Tpr David O’Mahoney had been serving with the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment at Hyde Park Barracks for nearly two years, riding on a number of highly prestigious parades. On the evening of 7 Oct 2011, when walking back from the Royal Albert Hall with members of the Blue and Royal Squadron, David was hit by a taxi when crossing the road. The taxi, which was travelling at over 30mph, drove over him and had to reverse back to allow members of the Squadron to give first aid. David’s Squadron Corporal Major and Troop Corporal of Horse used their military training to control his C-Spinal injuries and stem the bleeding from his head.

Minutes after the accident he stopped breathing. An SAS doctor arrived and resuscitated him. Shortly after this an ambulance arrived. The paramedics stated that without the first aid he was given straight after the accident Tpr O’Mahoney would have died.

David was then in a comma (Glasgow scale 3) for just under three weeks on a breathing ventilator due to catastrophic head trauma.

Doctors told his family that he was not expected to survive and if he did he was expected to be in a vegetative state. Friends and family were told to say their goodbyes as David was wheeled into surgery after three weeks. Doctors operated to relieve the pressure in Tpr O’Mahoney’s head. Maj Twumasi Ankrah, the Blue and Royal Squadron leader, was at the hospital at this crucial moment and he corralled the morale of David’s family as he would have his men in Afghanistan (where he is now).

After the surgery David’s family were told he responded well to the operation but that he would still be severely brain damaged and disabled and fully reliant on others for the rest of his life.

During this trial Corporal of Horse Young, the Welfare NCO, and Maj TA worked tirelessly to provide support, accommodation and transport for Tpr O’Mahoney’s family. This money came from the Household Cavalry Foundation.

Three days after the operation Tpr O’Mahoney was brought out of the comma and regained consciousness. It then took two and a half weeks for him to regain the powers of speech and lucidity. His head, as evident in the photo, was deformed by the operation, but this is to be fixed in March. He moved to Hedley court a week later and spent nine weeks recovering there. After discharge on 22 December 11 he enjoyed Christmas with his family. By January David was already begging his superiors and doctors to let him come back to work. He got his wish at the start of February when he was allowed to work for two days a week under supervision.

Tpr O’Mahoney said: “The support provided by the Regiment was amazing. If it wasn’t for the Regiment and the help provided by the Foundation, I don’t know what my family would have done. It was such a difficult time for everyone but the Regiment ensured that my family only had to think about my recovery.” As a token of thanks to the Regiment and the Foundation, Tpr O’Mahoney, with the help of his sister, held his own charity event at the start of February and raised £4000 for the Foundation.

The Household Cavalry Foundation

The Household Cavalry Foundation has been set up to care for the men, families, horses and heritage of Britain’s Senior Regiment. Whether caring for soldiers injured on operations or providing relief to retired veterans and their dependants, the Household Cavalry Foundation aims to provide an umbrella of support to its Regimental family.

The Foundation is in place to provide succour to five charitable aims;

• Soldier Welfare: To provide support to, and promote the efficiency of, serving members of the Household Cavalry. Whether to relieve distress or hardship, assist those injured on training or in peacetime, or encourage sport, adventure training, team building or charitable endeavour, the Household Cavalry Foundation is there to care for all men serving both home and abroad.

• Casualty Welfare: To provide financial support to injured soldiers and their families, including those who have lost their lives on active service, through the Household Cavalry Operational Casualties Fund.

• Veterans Welfare: Relieve past members of the Household Cavalry and their dependents who are in need, hardship or distress, or those who have become seriously ill, or have broader welfare needs.

• Horse Welfare: To provide and support, financial or otherwise, to organisations and individuals involved in the welfare of our horses such as the Horse Trust.

• Maintain the Fabric of the Household Cavalry: To ensure the maintenance of our operational and ceremonial heritage and ethos, museums and archives, regimental property, and recruiting.

Monies raised for The Household Cavalry Foundation is to help the wounded soldiers, their families and also the horses – their care not only while they are actively serving in The Cavalry but also their care once they retire from their “duties”. No soldier or horse is ever forgotten by The Household Cavalry.

Cystic Fibrosis Trust Project 2012

Cystic Fibrosis is one of the UK’s most common, life-threatening, inherited diseases

Through research, better understanding and treatment, life expectancy is increasing.

The CF Trust is one of the charities that the Motcomb Street Party will be supporting in 2012.

A Cystic Fibrosis Wing is currently being built at Kings Hospital in London.

Our aim is to fund a room at King’s Hospital in their new Cystic Fibrosis wing.

The total cost for each room is £56,000.

With the money we gave last year plus this year’s money we would hope to be able to do that.

Cystic Fibrosis & King’s Hospital have said they want to put up a plaque in recognition of our tremendous support – which is fabulous.

The Cystic Fibrosis Trust does tremendous work. Currently the life expectancy of someone with CF is around 38 years old – not too long ago some wouldn’t live much past birth or at the very most 2 years old. So incredible progress has been made but there’s still a lot more that can be done. Cross infection is life threatening to anyone with CF which is why all hospitals need (and must have) a special CF wing. King’s hospital is one of the hospitals that don’t have a CF wing and The Cystic Fibrosis Trust is working exceptionally hard to fund the new wing that’s currently being built there.

Patients with CF require repeated admission to hospital to treat lung infections and other complications.

Organisms can be transmitted between individuals with CF and sharing bathrooms can increase the risk of cross infection as many of the bacteria specific to CF thrive in these areas. To reduce the risk of cross infection between CF patients they need to be cared for in individual rooms with en-suite facilities.

The development of a specialist ward area with side rooms and en-suite facilities is needed to cope with the increase in CF patient numbers and to reduce the risk of cross infection.

In order to address the current problems outlined above, the new CF wing being built at King’s Hospital will be a dedicated facility that meets the necessary requirements for infection control, with 10 single en-suite rooms, treatment rooms and day case facilities to minimise the risk of cross infection.

Kings Hospital is very happy for us to arrange for particular sponsors to visit the rooms.

Wednesday 27th June 2012 will be our 25th Anniversary. It’s incredible that our annual Motcomb Street Party has been “going” for that length of time!

Every year it just gets better and better. In the last 25 years we’ve given over £1 million to the various charities that we’ve supported. The tremendous public support of our event has made that possible and the Street Party Commitee and Charities are eternally grateful for that support. So a huge thank you!

The plans for this year’s 25th Street Party are already well underway. The voluntary Street Party Commitee meets on a regular basis from February until the actual date of the Street Party. It’s a huge party so takes a lot of planning! All our applications to the Council and Health & Safety with regards to road closure permission, temporary structure license (ie: permission to erect a stage), parking suspension etc. have been submitted and accepted. The evening’s entertainment has all been booked – it will be fantastic. There’s a tremendous demand from people wanting to have a stall on the evening. All the stalls have been taken – in fact we have a large waiting list…… Last year’s stall holders really excelled themselves and all will be having their usual stalls again this year – which is fabulous.

By popular demand, the two charities we will be supporting this year are The Household Cavalry Foundation & The Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

Monies raised for The Household Cavalry Foundation is to help the wounded soldiers and their families and also the horses – their care not only while they are actively serving in The Cavalry but also their care once they retire from their “duties”. No soldier or horse is ever forgotten by The Household Cavalry.

The Cystic Fibrosis Trust. As I think everyone knows, our aim is to fund a room at King’s Hospital in their new Cystic Fibrosis wing. With the money we gave last year plus this year’s money we would hope to be able to do that. Cystic Fibrosis & King’s Hospital have said they want to put up a plaque in recognition of our tremendous support – which is fabulous. The Cystic Fibrosis Trust does tremendous work. Currently the life expectancy of someone with CF is around 38 years old. Not too long ago some wouldn’t live much past birth or at the most 2 years old.

Please do email me if you’d like to become a sponsor, patron or donor to this year’s party.
More updates to follow.

Best Wishes

Can you believe that tomorrow is the 6th July and another Motcomb Street Party???

Just a quick post to say thank you so so much for all of your incredible support. It means so much and without your support we wouldn’t be able to raise the monies we do for our charities. It’s really amazing when you think about it that a Street Party can have given over half a million pounds to various charities in the last 20 years.

It’s going to be a fantastic evening – as always.
Really looking forward to seeing you all there.
